Marvel who is partnered and owned by Disney has announced yet another iconic marriage in comicdom! Joining the ranks of Spiderman, Cyclops and Mr. Fantastic will be Northstar of the X-men who will be exchanging vows in Astonishing X-men #51 due out June 20th. So what is the big controversy over this issue? Just that the Canadian character Jean-Paul Beaubier will finally be tying the knot with his partner Kyle Jinadu. Their relationship story and the love they share has been developing over the course of the series and it is no secret that Northstar and the famous character Colossus had a brief interest in each other if you follow X-Men.

Gay characters have been in comics for decades and it is a shame that people are using this specific issue to make a statement whether good or bad. For comic book lovers who have been in the industry since childhood, we are disappointed that there are those that are tainting our world with their non-productive actions or comments and taking the "fun" out of what we cherish. Many have yet to learn that even Archie Comics has released a gay character named Kevin Keller who now has his own series and that Batwoman of DC is open about her lifestyle. DC recently announced that one of their iconic characters, Green Lantern, is coming out openly and that their writer Grant Morrison of Batman claims his character which has been idolized for generations was conceptualized as "gay".

Unfortunately, if we lived in a perfect world we wouldn't have to use terms to identify people and that these characters would then only be referred to as "characters" rather than by the color of their skin, religion or lifestyle.

There has been recent news that a majority of comic book collectors are "gay" and those incorrect statistics could not be that more misleading.  It is apparent that these critics have never attended one of the world's greatest ComicCon Conventions held in San Diego where a majority of the attendees with their families are straight.  The event itself may have a mix of "protected classes" but it does not make it labeled as a specific type. In all the years we have attended, the acceptance and respect for one another who support such a great artistic event serves as a reminder that underneath even the costumes of fans people are ultimately that, people and not labels.  We ourselves project with a few gay  people even though the majority is that of heterosexuals but it does not hinder our ability to collaborate with a person who shows artistic potential and good-will.  It is no different if a majority of our projecting teams are comprised of blacks, latinos or females, we focus on the talent and ethical beliefs rather than ancestry, gender or sexual orientation.

Some people are claiming to no longer support Marvel and are banning their movies and books. If that is the case, then you will have to discard all your Disney movies, memorablia and trips to the park since Disney is the parent company of Marvel. I doubt people will really do these things because of their love for the art and family memories and values associated and represented with these companies. Words are only being shared more for the attention factor whether for media publicity or just fueling bigotry. However, if you mean to act on this then donate all your Marvel and Disney items to a charity to assist in the fight to find a cure for Cancer, Leukemia or Lymphoma. Do some good rather than harm with your intentions.

Regardless of people's choices and beliefs, Backstage Pass supports many artists, events and projects regardless of color, race, religion or orientation. The backlash of sharing this information has become more of a political stand for activists, politicians and media and it was important to present this information on a positive level rather than trying to appear as if we are trying to make a statement as many are doing for their own selfish agendas. Backstage Pass is not a forum for argument so we will not tolerate any unconstructive messages on our feed, however, you can send us a personal message to voice your concern if you have any. We only ask that you leave messages on a positive note rather than a negative because we project with many young artists and their families and it is everyone's responsibility as well as our own to set good examples. You will never find us arguing cases with people on-line because it can become a played out "comment" event. Our philosophy is based on strong spiritual beliefs and many of us come from religious families that have raised us not to judge but accept people for who they are. There is a time and a place for conversations and arguing on-line is what we consider an unprofessional approach.

Lets now focus on the fact that the story and work recently in Astonishing X-Men #50 was well-done, especially the cover artwork and expect nothing less with the release of issue #51.  Without the collaboration of such incredible people, the world of comics would be non-existent. To give you an idea of the group needed to work on a single issue, here are the latest featured talents of Astonishing X-men:

Marjorie Liu, writer
Mike Perkins, artist
Andy Troy, colorist
VC's Joe Caramagna, letterer
Dustin Weaver & Rachell Rosenberg, cover
John Cassaday & Laura Martin, variant cover
Daniel Ketchum, associate editor
Jeanine Schaefer, editor
Nick Lowe, x-men group editor
Alexl Alonso, editor in chief
Joe Quesada, chief creative officer
Dan Buckley, publisher
Alan Fine, executive producer

There are many comic stores that have held events to commemorate the release of specific books including the marriage of Peter Parker to Mary Jane, Mr. Fantastic to The Invisible Girl as well as Cyclops to Phoenix and recently the epic story launch of Avengers vs. X-men which we celebrated with give-aways and cake at Metroplis Comix, recently voted #1 book store by KCRA and Sacramento! It goes without saying that they will also be hosting another celebration to commemorate yet another iconic moment in comic history with the wedding of Northstar to Kyle Jinadu on June 20th. Expected to sell off the shelves, it may be a good idea to check-in to see if you can reserve a copy and create a saver as we have so you do not miss out on future issues that will become collectibles.
